STEARNS HOLDING HEARING ON THE IMPACT OF KATRINA ON COMMERCE AND CONSUMERS
PANEL WILL EXAMINE PRICE GOUGING AND OTHER PREDATORY PRACTICES AND THE STORM'S IMPACT ON VARIOUS INDUSTRIES

Washington, Sep 21, 2005 - "The loss in life, and the grief and despair resulting from Katrina and the flooding are beyond measure," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee.  "In addition, there are the economic consequences of this massive storm on various industries and on individual consumers.  This panel will examine the impact of Katrina on commerce and on consumers."

Added Stearns, "Sadly, in addition to being victimized by the storm, many individuals fell victim to fraudsters capitalizing on tragedy and to predators who hiked prices at the pump, in the store, and even online.  I look forward to hearing from the Federal Trade Commission and our other witnesses on what happened after this disaster, and how we can better protect consumers and businesses in the future."

The hearing entitled "The Commerce and Consumer Implications of Hurricane Katrina" will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in room 2322 Rayburn.
