STEARNS WORKING WITH CHAIRMAN POMBO TO REMOVE AMENDMENT OPENING COASTAL WATERS TO NATURAL GAS DEVELOPMENT
STEARNS SENDS POMBO LETTER OUTLINING OBJECTIONS AND PROPOSING SOLUTIONS
Washington,
Sep 29, 2005 -
"I have been working with other House members, Governor Bush and his representatives, and Chairman Pombo of the Resources Committee on developing language giving the states permanent control over their offshore resources," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). "As a result, Chairman Pombo offered legislation giving Florida control over any oil or gas drilling off its coast out to 125-miles in most cases. With the moratoria expiring in 2007 and 2012, these proactive steps would provide protection for Florida's pristine beaches and waters. Unfortunately, an amendment adopted by the Resources Committee yesterday opens all coastal waters to potential natural gas drilling, including those off of Florida."
In response to this amendment, Stearns and Rep. Michael Bilirakis (R- Tarpon Springs) wrote to Chairman Pombo stating, "we urge you to work with us to remove this harmful language as this bill moves through the legislative process." The amendment as approved would allow natural gas development within three miles of Florida's Atlantic Coast and within nine miles of its Gulf Coast. Added Stearns, "This amendment clearly shows the threat to Florida's coast and the need for a permanent resolution giving the states the final decision on approving drilling or opting out."
"In my recent discussions with Mr. Pombo, he expressed his willingness to work with me and others to remove the language of this amendment and to restore the provisions protecting Florida's coasts. I ask my colleagues from Florida to join me in this important effort."
